Duxbury denies Indians in state lacrosse tournament

By Matt Lee, Sun Correspondent

Updated: 06/12/2011 06:41:40 AM EDT

BILLERICA– The Billerica High boys lacrosse program knows exactly how it feels to dominate an opponent year after year– they do it to just about every team on their schedule. But the one team that has their number knocked them out of the postseason yet again.

Propelled by a flawless second quarter, Duxbury is back in the state final after a 19-9 rout at Calabrese Stadium yesterday.

It was the fourth time in the last five years that Billerica (20-3) has bowed out of the tournament at the hands of Duxbury (three state semis, 2008 state final).

“It’s very frustrating losing to them again,” Billerica coach Craig Flynn said. “People ask me about that, and the fact is they haven’t lost to a public school in about nine years. The only Massachusetts team to beat them is St. John’s Prep.”

Duxbury (18-3) scored six unanswered goals that stretched from the final minute of the first half to the 10-minute mark of the third quarter. The Dragons led 14-4 after the run that put the Indians out of striking distance.

“They don’t do anything special,” Flynn said. “They’re just a good, disciplined team. Plus, in the first half their goalie was coming up with some big saves.”

The loss marks the end of a remarkable high school career for Billerica attack Grant Whiteway.

He set the Massachusetts single season scoring record this year, and is second on the state career scoring list.

Duxbury did a superb job defensively on Whiteway, holding the UMass

Amherst recruit to one goal in each of their meetings this year.

“Duxbury tries to lock Grant off,” Flynn said. “They try not to let him touch the ball at all. We expected them to do that, and we have some things to counter that. We just didn’t have the ball on offense enough.

“Our attack unit as a whole was great. Cam Slatton, Ben Melaugh and Grant were all over 100 points. I can’t remember the last time a team has done that.”

Billerica trailed 4-3 after the first quarter. Ben Melaugh scored five seconds into the contest to give Billerica its only lead.

Melaugh scored twice and assisted twice. Attack Nick Morello led Billerica with three goals, and Ross Murphy scored a pair.

While Whiteway posted staggering individual numbers this season, as a team Billerica enjoyed a school record 18-game winning streak. The Indians fell to 2-2 after a 12-9 loss to Duxbury on April 14. Billerica did not lose again until yesterday.

“These guys are a great team,” Flynn said. “They’ve got a lot to be proud of.”
